A Sprint and an Ultra-Long Race

Sunday, 27 August 2017

This weekend local orienteers were provided with a 2 stage sprint event at Mt Barker on Sunday 27th August. Course planner Craig Colwell and Onkaparinga Hills OC provide the first sprint event at Mt Barker covering the TAFE, primary school and some adjacent parklands. The second event was at Cornerstone College which had not previously been used for an event in South Australia.  The courses through the complex school buildings (see course map) caused may orienteers to pause and check their location and routes.

Other SA orienteers in the junior and senior Southern Arrows meanwhile travelled to the ACT to participate in the annual NOL Ultra-long race on Saturday, followed by a Middle Distance event on the Sunday.

The sprint event was run as a 2 stage race, with the competitor times over the 2 courses added to give a cumulative time for the day.  John Nieuwenhoven was fastest on Course 1 overall, and on each separate stage, just over a minute ahead of Andrew Kennedy.  And a great effort by Jemima Lloyd winning ahead of many more experienced orienteers on Course 2.

Results are here.  All course maps are available on our Facebook page.

In the ACT Simon Uppill won both days for the NOL events (the Ultra-long race was 19 km), while Bridget Anderson was third in the Ultra-long event (12.5 km). Dante Afnan ran a very commendable 6th place in the junior men’s 13.5 km ultra-long race.  The courses covered some steep rocky hill slopes of "The Gib" map, as well as the faster hilltop ridge.
