Onkaparinga Hills Orienteers Homepage

The Onkaparinga Hills Orienteering Club was formed in 1978 and we have approximately 30 individual, family and social memberships. John Such is the President and is supported by a band of enthusiastic club members.  Members are generally (but not exclusively) from the Mitcham and Mitcham Hills area.

Each year the club runs about several events and a team effort results in a well run event with courses to suit different ages and navigation abilities. Events are local Adelaide suburban events through to major events further from Adelaide.

The club also has training activities, and can offer new members training (at an event or evening training sessions).  Contact Robin Uppill (8278 3017 or 0419 037 770) for more information.  Many of our members also participate in Tuesday and Thursday eventing fitness training - contact Bridget Anderson for more information (0432 511 836)

During the year a number of social events are held. Specifically, there are BBQs at some events, there is a popular annual dinner and, the AGM is a social event with only a short formal interlude.

A number of committee members hold important roles on the state body (OASA) committee. Robin Uppill is OSA Technical Officer, Adrian Uppill is Mapping Coordinator, David Tilbrook is publicity officer, and Bridget Anderson coaching coordinator.

In elite competition, Simon Uppill runs in the South Australian Southern Arrows team in the National Orienteering League, and has represented Australian in both Junior and Senior World Orienteering Championships.  Bridget Anderson, recently moved to SA from Queensland, has also run in JWOC for Australia, and is currently coach of the Junior Southern Arrows Squad.

Australian Three Days Report

Thursday, 12 April 2012

The Australian Three Days including the elite prologue event were held over Easter at three areas near Stanthorpe and a fourth area near Warwick in SE Queensland.

Full stories and results are available on the event web site at http://www.easter2012.com.au/.  See the links to Route Gadget for maps and courses.

The event began with the short distance elite prologue and Family Teams event at Wilmott's Waterhole near Stanthorpe.  Amongst the competitive teams, Simon and Robin Uppill, and Bridget Anderson combined to have the second best overall time.  Day 1 moved to a granite map area which straddled the NSW - Qld border, and the vague terrain on the first part of the courses, led to mistakes by many orienteers.  Spur gully terrain with some mining area and thicker vegetation due to lantana and seedy grass cover on the Shanty Gully map west of Warwick made for easier running on the shorter courses which avoided the thicker areas, but become an endurance test for the longer elite courses.  The third day returned to Stanthorpe, to another granite area and more technical orienteering.

South Australian Orienteers who had success were

- Simon Uppill 1st in M21E
- Susanne Casanova 2nd in W21E
- Vanessa Round 3rd in W21E
- Susi Bertei 2nd in W35AS
- Robin Uppill 1st in W55A
- Adrian Uppill 2nd in M60A
- John Lyon 3rd in M75A
- Julianne Giffard 3rd in W Open B
