MT. HAYFIELD
23 May 1999

The weather the previous evening provided some of the worst driving conditions I had ever experienced in the metro area (anyone else try out the southern section of Portrush Road?). Thus it was with fear and trepidation that I ventured down on the day to help on the finish, remembering all too well 30.8.92, when the conditions WERE frighteningly wet and gusty on the day, in places the side of the hills fell away when one stood on it, and the "results stand" was between someone's thumb and forefinger! 50 people (including many of today's attenders) had results recorded that awesome day, compared with 66 today. I wonder how many other people are affected by disinclination prior to inclement events with potentially fearful access for 2-wheel drive vehicles. HOWEVER, the conditions were indeed quite reasonable this time, with occasional flecks of sunshine. The ranger wisely decided to disallow vehicles from the forest tracks, so the registration tent moved east to achieve proximity to the parked vehicles at the south-east corner of the map. Metr-O-League and SST aspects of the event at least attracted sufficient people for a quorum (whatever that might be in orienteering) this far south to this magnificent but oft-steep area: if you love pine forests with quirky clearings though, this is THE spot. More experienced orienteers were almost exclusively the attenders, with only 2 unclubbed (!) people. Pleasingly there were almost no DNFs. OHOC members were out in force and in good cheer. As the last competitor climbed up the hill to the finish, closely followed by the collector of his last control, at a relatively early 2:17, there was indeed pleasure amongst the OHOC-ers. The finishers I witnessed were happy with the courses seemingly, with one well-known long-serving orienteer saying that finding the markers was not a problem, just traversing the countryside in-between! Yes, I can relate to that! Thanks to the wide contingent of OHOC helpers, especially those who erected the registration tent in two locations! Special thanks to the course setters, Muriel and Stuart Lane, and major helpers Vincent Loye and Adrian Uppill and others that I am unaware of who may have qualified as "major" as well!
