Orienteering Results for Black Hill Event
  Sunday13 May 2001

More than 80 competitors enjoyed glorious autumn weather for the Mother’s Day event at Wadmore Park and adjacent Black Hill Park. The usual Sunday format was changed slightly to allow competitors to run and still get away early to see Mum (or for Mum to be seen by the ankle biters). The 9am start did not deter and the 10 am Mass Start attracted 9 runners with a couple starting at 10.02 either by default (not ready) or as a chasing start.

On Course 6, Zoe and Tony Radford and Lachlan Hallett challenged. Tony kept Lachlan in close sight until control 4 when the hills started. At this point youthful legs could not be matched.  (Course 6 require course 5 and course 3 to be completed)

Zoe had a battle with John Lyon and John Williams of Course 5 and she lead John W and John L to the finish line. John W pipped John L by a few seconds. Zoe and the Two Johns were close until control 4 when is seems Zoe pulled away. She caught Lachlan for a few controls at control 8-9-10 but had trouble with control 11. The two Johns and Zoe met at control 15 and raced to the finish. Wesley Dose chased the two Johns for the first half of the course and often led John L to the punch. Wes drifted off to finish a bit down the ranks but a good effort for an ever-improving junior. John Lyon reports that the pack used different route choices in places and raced within sight of each other at other times. The lead varied and it is interesting to see that close competition can be developed between diverse competitors within the suburban setting.

Those involved in the tussles report that the extra competition element of the mass start added to the excitement of the race.

Well done John Hall for wonderful courses. Many thanks to the helpers on the day.
