Orienteering Results for Morgan
 24 June 2001

Just over 30 Yalangans made their way from Adelaide to the warm winter sunshine that Morgan had to offer (never mind the dinner at the Commercial hotel the night before. So with the large number of Yalangans who turned up early on Sunday to set up, things were falling nicely into place by the time the first competitors lined up to start. The superb weather allowed the organisers to dispense with all tents, except for the two little ones overlooking the carpark. Everything was looking good for a quality event, run in an efficient yet low-key manner.
Then the plan started to unravel. Early feedback from Course 1 was not good. A control had gone missing, causing confusion for the juniors. At the time this control was being replaced, further stories came in from competitors on Course 2 of new missing controls. Fortunately this was not the case, but it did show the course setter that Course 2, and probably Course 1 as well, had possibly been set too hard. The myriad of tracks merging with the creekline was leading some competitors astray, past the controls that should have been obvious. The course setter and organisers apologise to those competitors who came away feeling frustrated with their course. Another competitor badly injured her foot and had to be assisted back to the carpark, bringing not only the enjoyment of their course to an abrupt end, but also ending holiday plans for the days that followed. The organisers wish her well in her recovery. Then reports emerged from some competitors on courses 8, 9 and 10 that a resident was complaining to them about a control that was too close to their house (the house was marked as out of bounds on the map. The control was shifted further away. Attempts were made to find and meet that resident, to no avail, and the control was restored to its original location. Given that the Area Manager had been contacted on every visit for setting, vetting and placing controls, and various locals had been met at times on site, information had fallen through the cracks somewhere.
Then, after the event, during collection of controls, Peter Mayer destroyed a tyre on a sharp rock, an added expense that no-one needs. Even so, despite all the problems of the day, most competitors seem to have had a good time, on courses that met their expectations, and gave them enough challenges to discuss and compare afterwards over their packed lunch.
Sincere thanks to the many Yalangans who turned up to the event to lend a hand, especially those who gave up their time to be there without even going out on a course.
