Orienteering Results for River Torrens Event
 11 March 2001

The day started cool and windy,  especially for the three who put out controls,  but was warm and sunny by midday. Just over 60 competitors came to enjoy Bill Catchpoole's courses in a park-like setting. Not a bad turn-out seeing as the event clashed with the Eureka Challenge. The area was surrounded by some large expensive-looking houses. Several, including yours truly, wished they could afford to live there!
Bill predicted some fast times and he was right,  as many took the opportunity to do some physical training. There's always opportunity for training at these simpler events:  physical training, control flow-through, and map memory to name a few. Several came back with wet feet,  presumably practicing red-lining! Several fast runners made mistakes,  so it shows you can't take park-type courses for granted. There was a fair bit of competitiveness amongst the fast runners. One father,  not known for his speed,  was very pleased to beat his light-footed daughter!
Irena (the mapper) congratulated Bill for getting a 7.6k course (in two loops) onto such a small map. Although Course 4 was the most popular course,  many tried the two-loop course and still made mistakes on the second loop!
A group of Yalangans collected for a social picnic lunch in the pleasant setting. But only a few non-Yalangans joined the group for lunch. I guess it was easy to go home for lunch and do some chores (yuk). Thanks to Bill for setting interesting courses (and for doing a lot of the pre-event organising), and to all helpers on the day.
